Coronavirus and the Country’s Future (12)

Government interference always means either violent action or the threat of such action…. Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men, of policemen, gendarmes, soldiers, prison guards, and hangmen. The essential feature of government is the enforcement of its decrees by beating, killing, and imprisoning. Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.[1]

We have a relative who recently discovered she has lung cancer. Not only that, but there is something showing also, on her femur. What could this be? Well, cancer can metastasize. A piece of the original growth can break off, then move through the person’s bloodstream to another part of the body, where it lodges and begins to grow. That’s not good.

But what happens to people can occur with whole nations, too.

What do I mean?

The means by which medical bureaucrats and politicians have successfully advanced their scare campaign in relation to coronavirus, may very well be replicated by other bureaucrats. Now, western societies have been trained to accept that if we have some serious health dangers, that may require vast sums of our monies to deal with, along with further invasions of our civil liberties.

This has been so successful of late, why shouldn’t Defence Department bureaucrats get the message, too? Like this:

This nation’s defences are in tatters. We need more ships, planes, tanks, guns, trained people and bureaucrats! We’ve got to increase our defence spending by at least a multiple of 2, because there are all these imminent threats. We could be at war in a year!

People (both good and evil) like to find examples for what they’re considering, and follow them. The Nazi’s genocide of the Jews had its historical precedents. Nations can get away with a lot under cover of war, and this still happens today.

The Turkish genocide of Armenian civilians in 1915-16, claiming some 1.5 million lives, was quickly public knowledge in Europe. Not only that, but the Soviet’s government’s liquidation of whole communities, beginning in the late 1920’s, in places like the Ukraine, was known to the Germans, too.

Hitler, in his usual contempt for the innocent, hinting of his plans for the Poles, said to his generals in August, 1939:

…Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?[2]

So when the Nazis launched their “Final Solution,” they had historical, relatively recent European precedents for their actions. They were not trail-blazing at all.

This should serve as a warning to the church today, and it requires action on our part.

I’ve been watching crowds protesting today in Melbourne, at the absolutely scandalous treatment their State Premier and government has handed out to them, since February. I wholeheartedly agree with them; they’ve been treated to shocking abuse.

But where are the people of God? Are they protesting too? If not, why not? Isn’t this a matter for Christians to be moved on? And if you thought,

I’ve never done this sort of thing, before,

I would say,

There’s a first time for everything.

And remember this sobering passage:

All those who hate me love death (Prov.8:36).

Socialist governments are implicitly or explicitly, at war with their people. They can only succeed through lies and the misuse of power, when people are duped; for a while.

In 2011, the Gillard Australian Labor government imposed a six week’s ban on live-cattle exports to Indonesia. Every farmer, truck-driver, and every other person employed in that cattle supply chain, had their livelihood removed, overnight. Those who suffered claimed that their own government was at war with them, some went bust, and it took years for others to recover. Only after a protracted Class Action court challenge this year, when the victims were awarded $400 million in compensation, did it appear to be settled.

And what did the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, then decide? He wanted to appeal the case! What sort of a friend was he, to those aggrieved, abused exporters? He had to be talked out of it.

Some 80-90,000 abortions take place in Australia, with State and Federal Health Department sanction. Are those bureaucrats willing to see those babies perish? Yes.

So, we shouldn’t think that abuse and death by government is such a strange thing, and couldn’t happen. There’s nothing new about it at all.

But Jesus warned us,

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men (Mat.5:13).

Conclusion:

Christians in Australia and all over the world have a lot of work to do. Why?

The cancerous growth of coronavirus propaganda, sponsored by governments, will metastasize. If the community is silent and largely submissive, governments will find a way to make it happen.

It’s easy for us to do what Adam did in the Garden: blame someone else for his failures. But God holds us accountable for the state of the nation.

Furthermore, we will pass on before long, leaving an inheritance of some kind to those who follow. What will it be like then, and what will they think of those that went before them?

The time to start is now.
